If the next three rounds of the Open Championship are anything like Thursday's opening round, then a classic could be in the making. No one or two players rushed off to an early lead, instead five players shared the first-round lead at 4-under 67. It was the most number of players to lead the first round since a record six shared the lead at Royal St. George’s in 1938 — Jimmy Adams, Bill Cox, Ernest Whitcombe, Marcel Dallemagne, John Fallon, Jimmy Bruen Jr. That opening round also featured seven players, including Whitcombe's brothers Reg and Charles, a stroke back after 18 holes. Reg Whitcombe would ultimately win the Claret Jug.
