FIRST THOUGHT

Would you consider yourself an avid or passionate golfer? If you're higher on the "passion scale," then you have more company than in 2019. The National Golf Foundation asked golfers the question "How would you classify yourself as a golfer?" The response options were: "Golf nut"/"'Hooked" (love playing/favorite activity); Casual golfer (enjoy playing but not top-of-mind); Golf is OK/Doesn't consider self a golfer (rarely play or choose other activities). The survey revealed that self-reported passionate golfers rose from 8.3 million in 2019 to 9.9 in 2024. It was a gain of 19%. Meanwhile, avid golfers — those who play 25-plus rounds per year — dropped from 5.6 million to 5.1 million.
