FIRST THOUGHT

Honestly, raise your hand if you knew three things about Michael Brennan before he won the Bank of Utah Championship Sunday. Maybe you knew he played collegiately at Wake Forest University or he was playing on a sponsors exemption or it was his professional PGA Tour debut, but beyond that? A deeper dive shows he was a winner waiting to happen on Tour. He had been dominating the PGA Tour Americas. Starting with the Explore NB Open in early July, Brennan, rattled off eight top-10 finishes in nine starts — including three wins in a four-start stretch. And consider this about his game, a stat from PGATour.com writer Paul Hodowanic: He led the [Bank of Utah Championship] field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, gaining more than seven strokes in the single-best driving performance on the PGA Tour this season. He ranked second in driving distance and ball speed and seventh in accuracy.
