The Friars Golf Club's fifth Friars Cup will be held along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, Alabama.
An area made famous by "Forest Gump" — the author of the book Winston Groom lives on a golf course — Point Clear and nearby Fairhope are idyllic towns. Think Carmel or Monterrey of the deep south (yes, you read that right).
The focal point is Point Clear's Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa, which offers world-class service, impeccable grounds and an array of services that will keep even the most discerning Friars happy. Nearby Fairhope is full of beautiful shops and some world class dining, including Plane and Level Coastal, The Hope Farm and The Wash House, which will host the closing dinner.
The Friars Cup will feature three different match-play formats — best ball, alternate shot and singles — played out at the resort's Lakewood Club. The 36-hole facility, which has hosted numerous USGA events, opened with the Perry Maxwell-inspired Dogwood course in 1947. Maxwell, a Golden Age architect, was also responsible for designing Southern Hills in Oklahoma, Prairie Dunes in Kansas and Old Town Club in North Carolina.
