Golf's biggest surprise story in 2025 may be J.J. Spaun

The 34-year-old considered quitting professional golf in 2024, but a U.S. Open win, along with runner-up finishes at the Players Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship, have turned his career around in 2025.

Question of the week [Aug. 11-17]: What has been the most surprising story in golf in 2025?

Well, there have been a few standouts for sure.

I believe Scottie Scheffler’s duel with the kitchen knife may be one of the greater surprises, given that one would expect him to have a full-time chef managing the family culinary expectations.

It ain’t over ‘til it’s over, but so far it has to be J.J. Spaun coming out of the pack and throwing his hat in the ring. Most other stories were likely just the usual suspects and expectations, but this guy has stepped up and shown he can do it. He is deserving of the recognition.

So let’s do that and observe what happens over the coming.

To me the most surprising story of 2025 is J.J. Spaun. Not only did he win the U.S. Open but he went into playoffs with Rory McIlroy (Players Championship) and Justin Rose (FedEx St. Jude Championship). He was barely a top-20 player and now he's a top-10 player.

The Vegas odds of him doing all of this were off the charts.
