KEY FACTOR
As winter’s weak La Nina fades, a trail of colder water extends toward Baja, while warm waters persist in the eastern Atlantic and Caribbean — potentially setting the stage for an active hurricane season. Looking at historical parallels from 1955, 1967, 1984, 1996, 2004, 2013 and 2014, here’s what golfers and course operators can expect in the weeks ahead as the season starts to ramp up across the country.

PROJECTED REGIONAL IMPACTS FOR GOLF OPERATORS
> Midwest and Northeast: Above-normal rainfall could lead to softer course conditions and perhaps fewer playable days as the season kicks off.
> Plains: Look for a drier stretch of weather ahead with below-normal rain.
> Pacific Northwest: Expect an above-average amount of rain days which should lead to wetter conditions and fewer playable days
> Southwest and New England: Near-normal rainfall should maintain typical course conditions.
> Southeast and Florida: Slightly drier conditions bode well for a strong month of April in terms of days on course.
