There was a time when a celebrity's name attached to a tournament was a thing. Think, for example, of the Bob Hope Desert Classic, Glen Campbell Los Angeles Open, Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, Nabisco Dinah Shore, Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open or Bing Crosby Pro-Am. In 1968, Byron Nelson became the first PGA Tour player to have his name be a part of the tournament's title. The Texas Victory Open, which debuted in 1944 with Nelson winning the inaugural event, saw its name morph several times before the Dallas Open Invitational became the Byron Nelson Golf Classic. Today, the tournament is known as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Nelson had 52 career PGA Tour wins, including a record 18 titles — 11 straight)at one point — in 1945.
