FIRST THOUGHT

Oakmont Country Club put such a beatdown on the U.S. Open field that only one player, champion J.J. Spaun, finished under par — and that was just 1-under par. Thursday, at the Travelers Championship, calm was restored on the PGA Tour. Austin Eckroat and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shared the lead at 8-under 62, while U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy and Wyndham Clark were just two shots back. All totaled 42 players were under par for the opening round at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
