FIRST THOUGHT

For winning the 2023 Tour Championship, Viktor Hovland ascended to No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the next stop to what could eventually be No. 1 the way he was playing at the time. Since August 2023, though, he has been on the decline, dropping to as low as No. 19 prior to last week's Valspar Championship, which he entered on the heels of three successive missed cuts. Sunday, though, Hovland shot a final-round 32 on Innisbrook's Copperhead Course, including birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 in the Snake Pit, en route to earning his seventh PGA Tour victory. He became the second player to birdie both of those holes in the final round en route to winning the Valspar Championship and the first since John Senden in 2014. More important, Hovland did a 180-degree turn in the world rankings, moving up to No. 8.
