FIRST THOUGHT

The RBC Heritage is not going to be confused with the Masters, but it certainly is playing like the Signature Event that is it — the fifth of eight this PGA Tour season. Major champions Justin Thomas (10-under 61), Scottie Scheffler (64) and Wyndham Clark (65) — along with Russell Henley (64) — found themselves atop the first-round leaderboard. The focus, though, was on Thomas, who equaled the RBC Heritage 18-hole scoring record with a 10-under 61 (David Frost, 1994; Troy Merritt, 2015) and set the standard for lowest opening-round score in tournament history — the previous being 62, three times, the last by Cameron Smith in 2021. Now for the bad news. No first-round leader or co-leader has won on Tour in 16 starts this season.
